4-H Livestock Project & Information on the 2023 Livestock Show Season

2023 Cass County Livestock Show_

2023 Cass County Livestock Show Rules, Guidelines, schedule and entry form

The Cass County Livestock Show is November 14, 2023. This year, since we don’t have an Ag Agent, Kay Burton and Heather Harris, 4-H Volunteers, will be collecting completed exhibitor entry forms and entry fees to turn into the Cass County Livestock Board. Please contact Kay- phone (903) 244-5275, email-kayburton1974@yahoo.com or Heather-Phone-903-738-9375, email-flatcreek22@gmail.com to get on the email list for important Cass County Livestock Show information.

In order to show under Cass County 4-H, you must be registered before you turn in your Livestock Show entries. If you are new to 4-H and need help enrolling in 4-H, please call the Extension Office-430-562-4844. If you have a child who will be entering 3rd grade for the 23-24 school year, please wait until September 1st to enroll so 4-H Online won’t enter them as a Clover Kid.

This show is Swine, Rabbits, Goats, and Broilers-Please read below for contact information on breeders:

Swine- Seth Penny is our swine contact for information for exhibitors who plan buying swine for showing. Unfortunately, is too late to purchase swine to show at the Cass County Livestock Show due to the amount of time needed to be on feed schedule. The Extension Office will be sure to share this information in time for exhibitors who plan to show swine next show season.

Rabbits- In the past we have had one breeder, Michael Heaton, to provide pens of rabbits to exhibitors. This year the exhibitor has the option of using a breeder of his/her choice.
You can still order rabbits from Mr. Heaton; his phone number is 361-564-8764. Last year the rabbits were $65/pen. You will show a pen of 2, but it is recommended you purchase an extra 1 or 2 pens, if you are able as rabbits are susceptible to heat exhaustion and are hard to keep alive in the extreme heat warnings Cass County has had. Please call NOW in order to not miss the deadline for showing in the Cass County Livestock Show. County Livestock Show validation is October 3, 2023.

Goats- If anyone wants to show a goat at the county show, please email Kay Burton as soon as possible. She will help you find a breeder. There are several goat exhibitors in and around Cass County and they have contacts on where to purchase goats.

Broilers- Please let Kay or Heather know IMMEDIATELY if you plan to show broilers (chickens) at the November show. A lot of planning is involved with raising chicks (buying and setting up heat lamps, pens, bedding, etc.). Heather Harris and her daughter, Payton, are very knowledgeable on raising and showing broilers. They are willing to help new exhibitors who wish to show broilers at the Cass County Livestock Show.

3) The Cattlemen’s Association will have heifer and steer validation Wednesday, September 27th from 4-6pm at the Cass County Ag Expo (metal building behind “old” Walmart/Currently ECI). If your child is planning on showing a steer or commercial heifer at the March Cattlemen’s Association of Cass County show, you will need to validate your animal at that time. Kay and Heather 4-H children have years of experience in showing heifers and steers. They also have numerous contacts for buying registered heifers, commercial heifers and steer. Please contact them if you are interested in purchasing and showing steer and commercial heifers in the Cattlemen’s Association of Cass County Winter Show in January 2024. Both the Harris family and our family have had a plethora of experience showing cattle.

4) Four States Fair Livestock Show is coming up in September 2023 so be sure to contact either Kay or Heather so you can get on the email list for information. Health Papers WILL be required for all livestock. You will also get information on the Four States Fair Livestock show entry information and show schedule as well as major shows (Houston Livestock Show, Fort Worth Stock Show, etc.) from the Cass County Extension Office secretary email, Karen.Porterfield@ag.tamu.edu. Entry Forms and information on all upcoming livestock shows will also be
